Crowns and Bridges in Mirrabooka

woman smiling while leaning on couch in mirrabookaLiving with missing, broken, or cracked teeth can interfere with your ability to chew properly and even speak clearly. The good news is that today’s dental restorations, such as crowns and bridges, offer excellent treatment options, and you can repair your smile with relative ease.

When Do We Recommend Dental Crowns

One of the most common reasons for a dental crown is to fix a tooth that a large filling has compromised. These often occur in the back molars of the mouth.

Every time a filling is placed, some of the tooth surface, including decay, has to be removed before the filling is placed. With a big enough filling, there isn’t much left of the tooth structure. Once the filling starts to fail, capping the tooth with a dental crown will protect what remains of the tooth and give it back its strength.

Here are some other situations where our dentists might recommend a tooth crown to restore your smile.

  • To cover a tooth weakened by a crack or fracture
  • To strengthen a tooth that’s had a root canal
  • To top a single dental implant
  • To anchor prosthetic teeth for a dental bridge
  • To enhance a misshapen or discoloured tooth

Aesthetically Pleasing E-MAX Crowns

If you have a dental crown, you may have noticed a grey margin between your dental crown and the gumline.

With E-MAX crowns, a type of all-ceramic crown, there is no grey line to detract from the beauty of your restoration.

This type of crown not only has natural-looking translucency that mimics a real tooth but is also strong and durable. It is more likely to last longer and be less susceptible to cracks or fractures.

The Advantages of Dental Crowns and Bridges

Restoring your compromised smile with a dental crown or bridge has several benefits.

Restored Aesthetics & Function

You will no longer have to worry about the appearance of your smile being diminished by a compromised tooth or gaps between your teeth. You will enjoy restored chewing function with your new crown or bridge, which promotes a healthy diet and good nutrition.

Oral Health Protection & Prevention

A crown protects a damaged tooth, while a bridge restores tooth alignment and bite function. Correct bite function reduces your chances of developing problematic jaw joint (TMJ) issues. Repairing your tooth with a crown also protects the root and nerve of your tooth from infection.

Durability

With the proper care, a dental crown can potentially last for 7 to 12 years. The best way to ensure the health and longevity of your dental restoration is to follow a consistent home care routine of daily brushing, flossing, routine exams, and teeth cleans with your dentist.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dental bridge longevity depends in part on how you care for it. In other words, you can take measures to help extend the life of your dental bridge.

On average, a dental bridge with proper care may last up to fifteen years.

dental bridgeWhat Is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge is a missing tooth replacement option. It can replace one or two teeth by bridging the gap in your smile.

The bridge is made of restoration teeth housed between tooth crowns. The crowns cap nearby teeth to support the bridge. A dental bridge may also rely on a dental implant to keep it in place.

Caring for Your Dental Bridge

For best results, your Mirrabooka dentist recommends keeping your smile healthy through brushing, flossing, regular exams and dental cleans. You want to ensure that you don’t experience future tooth loss, which will also compromise the fit and placement of your dental bridge.

To care for your dental bridge, we recommend keeping it fresh with a special cleaning brush and floss threader. A dental team member can talk to you about these accessories and provide additional tips for long-term care.

A dental crown is a protective cap that fits over a damaged, weakened or decayed tooth, strengthening it and shielding it from further damage.

At Western Smiles Dental Care, we often recommend dental crowns to protect a tooth when the tooth has been:

  • Structurally weakened due to a root canal treatment, extensive decay or a large filling
  • Cracked, chipped or fractured
  • Discoloured and needs to be covered

We use all-ceramic E-MAX crowns in our Mirrabooka dental practice and in our other practice locations in Dianella, Nolamarra and Balcatta, to provide the best outcomes to patients. E-MAX crowns have a flawless appearance, blending in perfectly with the patient’s smile. And they are strong and durable. Due to their strength, they aren’t very susceptible to cracks or fractures, and they often last longer than other types of crowns.

What’s the First Step?

The first step toward getting a dental crown is a thorough exam. After evaluating your dental needs, we may recommend a crown to cover a tooth. If that’s the case, we will customise the crown to your tooth and to blend in with your smile. The dental crown process usually takes at least 2-3 visits to complete.

Dental Bridges Replace Missing Teeth

mirrabooka man and woman smiling It can be tempting not to worry about missing teeth if you only miss one or two—especially if they are in the back of your mouth where they are not readily visible. But even one lost tooth can jeopardise all the teeth in your mouth. Here’s why.

Picture your teeth like a shelf of books. When one or two books are removed, the rest fall over to fill in the space. This happens when you have missing teeth, as well.

Over time, your remaining teeth tend to move to fill in the space left by the missing teeth. This can impact how you chew, leading to uneven wear on your remaining teeth. Ultimately, you might be putting yourself at risk of losing even more teeth.

dental bridge is a connector that fills the gap in your smile. Each side of the bridge is attached to a tooth adjacent to the space and features natural-looking false teeth in between to blend in with your smile. Your smile is fixed, so your appliance is not removable, and your remaining teeth are protected from shifting.

The Process of Getting a Dental Crown or Bridge in Mirrabooka

dental crown If you’re getting a traditional crown or bridge, the process is straightforward and takes two visits. If you’re getting an implant-supported bridge, your treatment will take three to six months to complete.

The process is similar whether you’re getting a dental crown or bridge. During your first appointment, our dentist will prepare your tooth for its new restoration, take impressions, and create a temporary crown or bridge for you to wear.

Our trusted dental lab will fabricate your new restoration in two to three weeks. Once completed, you’ll return to our Mirrabooka dental clinic to receive your new crown or bridge and have it permanently placed.

Getting an Implant-Supported Dental Bridge

An implant bridge relies on dental implants to anchor your prosthetic teeth instead of dental crowns.

Two dental implants on each side of the bridge can support one or multiple prosthetic teeth in between.

The first step is placing the dental implants during a simple surgical procedure. The implants need three to six months to fully heal and integrate with your jawbone before we place your final restoration.

Our dentists will monitor your healing process and place your implant bridge once your dental implants are properly healed and integrated.

Dental implants keep your jawbone healthy and stimulated, so you don’t have to endure the bone deterioration accompanying tooth loss.
