Dealing with many serious issues is accompanied by thoughts of just how easily preventable said issue once was. This is especially true of dental health, whose most costly, painful, and time-consuming complications can often be avoided with routine upkeep and care.

At Western Smiles Dental Care, we know that with preventive care, our patients in Mirrabooka, Dianella, and the surrounding areas can minimise minor dental issues and prevent major problems from arising.

What Is Preventive Dentistry?

Preventive dentistry is a series of simple steps that we can take to prevent serious dental health issues in the future.

First, there are steps that we can take at home. These include twice daily brushing, daily flossing, regular rinses with antiseptic mouthwash, avoiding foods high in processed sugars, and the use of tobacco products.

Every bit as vital to long-term dental health is regular dental check-ups. These visits allow a dentist to assess the health of your teeth and gums and preemptively identify risk factors for more serious issues like gum disease or oral cancers.

Anxiety-Free Dental Exams in Mirrabooka

We should all visit the dentist at least twice a year for a dental cleaning and examination.

These routine appointments typically involve a head and neck examination to ensure jawbone and lymph node health, digital X-rays, and an examination of the inside of the mouth to identify cavities, loose or broken fillings, cracked teeth, and early signs of more serious issues.

During a cleaning, using special tools, plaque and tartar are removed from the surfaces of the teeth and gums. Once the cleaning is complete, the dentist will discuss with the patient any potential issues and provide suggestions for home dental care improvements.

At Western Smiles Dental Care, we understand that some patients experience anxiety when visiting a dentist and recognise how important it is that this process be handled in a caring and empathetic manner. Our principal dentist, Dr Peter Duke, takes care to create a relaxing environment and establish a relationship with every patient in order to ensure they’re at ease from the moment they walk in our door.
